EPILOGUE
There are many
areas awaiting further research, depending on whether you wish to take the
'macro' or 'micro' approach.
If you belong to the latter school, then two
names stand out. Both Sung Ching-chuen
and Luk King-fo
have further documents awaiting further scrutiny.
Reverend Carl
Smith's notes (based on old newspapers and court documents) mentioned Sung
Ching- Chuen's high profile social activities :
1882, donation of $50 to Irish Relief Fund .
1882 Feb 28,
banquet for Governor Hennesy at Tung Wah Hospital
Reverend Smith
also noted a court case which might well be linked to the decline of the Sung
Family fortunes:
Memorial 16878
Supreme Court Suit 21 of 1888, involving the partners of 'Yue Cheong Bank'.
Chan Sz, exeutor of Ho Kit Vs A.G. Wiseand C.F.A.Sangster (adm. pedenti ite of
Sung Ching Chuen.
As for Luk King-fo, more and more materials
have surfaced when the roles of moderate reformers and revolutionaries became
less sensitive issues.
It should be
noted, however, that neither Sung Ching-chuen nor Luk King-fo was our 'direct
ancestor'. Both were 'great grand-uncles' and therefore peripheral.
There are some intriguing questions, e.g.
-Why did Sung
Kee come to Hong Kong so early (1840) when the place was barely an attractive
land of opporunities? (The British did not establish proper administration
until 1844)
- What role did
Sung Ching-Chuen play as one of the 'Chinese community leaders' of his time
(1870s and 1880s)? Governor Hennesy was known for his pro-Chinese sentiments.
His successors were much less sympathetic.
Sung
Ching-Chuen managed to buy properties in Shelley Street which was an area that
the British had originally intended to keep the Chinese out. (See Joseph Ting's
article in Wang Gungwu ed. Hong Kong History: New Perspectives, Joint
Publishing, 1997)
Sung Yu-Cheong
and Sung Ken's dabbling in western pharmaceutical products like hair-regrowth
ointment, cough medicines etc. was also interesting. Both learnt some English
and had access to English books on such pseudo-chemical knowledge. According to
a Hong Kong Museum video on early HK industries, many adventurous HK
industrialists tried exports in such drug-related and chemical-products related
ventures.
Sung Yu-Cheong and Sung Ken's involvement
with the HK Jockey Club operations could also be further explored. Unusal
side-line jobs for people who knew English in those days:
A very
intriguing footnote in HK history.
The Genealogy
has been prepared particularly for our children's generation, and for those who
will follow them. For those who wish to know their roots, the SUNG'S GENEALOGY
is a useful start.
We are the 6th
generation of the Family since Sung Kee moved to Hong Kong from China in 1840.
By this fateful year of 1997 when Hong Kong became SAR,China, the Sungs are no
longer a purely Hong Kong family. Look at our nationality and our place of
abode: we are citizens of the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and New
Zealand.
Dear children, amongst the 13 of you in the
7th generation of Sung descendants, only four of you live in Hong Kong today
(Karen Wat, Samuel Sung, and Hiu-man, Hiu-tung).
Five of you
were in fact born far away from the ancestral homeland (John Ip in New Zealand,
Johanna and Alan in the US, Tim Choy in the US, and Cynthia Leung in Canada).
The rest of you were emigrants from Hong Kong at various stages of your young
lives: Vivian Ip left Hong Kong as a baby, Conrad Wat, Eric and Brian left when
they were teenagers.
I sincerely
hope that the Genealogy can help you to understand your relationship with all
these cousins, and help you maintain some kind of contact if you wish to.
I shall just
end with two lines taken from two different well-known Chinese poems:
We are all originally from the same roots
Though far
apart, may we be like neighbours.
ben shi tong gen sheng
(originally
same root grow)
tian ya ruo bi lin
(Heaven rim
similar close neigbours)
